Nothing represents the schism between good and evil like the one dimensional characters of early camp comic books. Strong-jawed heroes locked in combat with dastardly villains, rescuing fainting women and conversing with humorous sidekicks. And since my style's veered so firmly into comic territory - well, why not.
Now that I've drawn such painfully cheesy characters, I kind of want to explore their background. Especially Jet. And how he doesn't manage to roast his own backside in that armour.
Oh my goood, wow has your shading gotten MlND BLOWlNG. l love that blue highlight, it's just subtly different enough to really make the three villains pop. One thing l did notice, however, is that the big shadow on the ground...is casting a shadow. Which makes it look like a 3D shadow, or sorta like a big puddle of ink. For a few seconds, l did think that that was what it was. l would also tone down the highlight on villain far-rights shoe, since it makes it look like he isn't connected to his shadow. Otherwise, totally awesome! <3
Science Thing 1: "NO! JET STARR HAS FOUND OUR LAIR!!! NOW OUR CREATION OF THE PERFECT HUMAN AS A FLIMSY EXCUSE TO SKIRT RESTRICTIONS ON SHOWING NUDITY IN A PRINTED WORK IS RUIIIIINED!!!"
Jet: "I'm not here for that, you Frankensteinian rapscallions!"
Science Thing 2: "...You're not?"
Jet: "Ha-ha-ha! No, I need a bathroom like FDR needs crutches! Preferably one with a big sink! This jetpack is roasting my tuchas like a Christmas goose!"
I saw this in passing on my deviantwatch list the other day, and it didn't click with me that your name was below it until just now
Seriously, this is a mind-blowingly tight piece of work! The color, the light, the shading, and the lineart itself is amazing. I think you've committed an evolutionary leap forward in your work with this one.
If i could venture a mild critique, compositionally it might have been more interesting to have a little more of a frontal view of Jet Starr, for as pimp as his jetpacks are, not seeing our hero's face is a little lackluster. Maybe smashing all epic-like from the background through a door (or a wall).
But in the end, that's not a huge issue, because from a technical standpoint this is a very kickass piece! Well done!
Thanks so much for dropping by! I've had this image in my head ever since seeing some lovely inking work at a convention (the original plates of a four-page eighties pulp scifi comic) and I wanted to try my hand at it. Quill inking is murder.
But yeah! Next time i do something like this, i'll try switching the viewpoint around - though i confess the entire point with having his back to the viewer was to abuse backlighting (heheh) and to make the villains the central focus. It would have worked just as well to have them whirling around, caught in mid-mischief, though. Maybe a followup piece...heh heh heh.
